Islamic Story for Kids About Helping Elders: The Heavy Shopping Bags
Allah loves the ones who help others — and helping old people is one of the most beloved good deeds. This is the story of Mariam, two heavy shopping bags, and the kind old neighbour who taught her that helping hands make a happy heart.
Mariam was eight, and she could run very fast. One afternoon, she was racing her ball down the street when she saw Aunty Rashida, the old lady who lived three houses away. Aunty Rashida was walking very slowly. In each hand she carried a heavy shopping bag, and the bags looked like they were pulling her arms down.
“Aunty, let me help you!” Mariam said, running to her side. Aunty Rashida smiled. “Oh Mariam, these bags are too heavy for a little girl.” “I am stronger than I look!” Mariam laughed. She took one bag in both hands. It WAS heavy — but she did not complain.
Step by step, they walked to Aunty Rashida’s door. “Come in, come in!” said Aunty Rashida. “You have saved my arms today.” Inside, the house smelled of fresh bread. Aunty Rashida poured Mariam a glass of cool water and gave her two warm dates. “Your mother is raising a kind daughter,” she said.
Mariam felt happy all the way home — happier than when she won races at school. That evening she told her mother everything. Her mother said, “Mariam, old people are a gift from Allah. When we are young, our legs are strong. When people grow old, they need our strong legs. One day, we will be old too — and we will be so happy when someone helps US.”
After that, Mariam helped Aunty Rashida every Friday. Sometimes she carried bags. Sometimes she just sat and listened to Aunty’s stories about the old days. Aunty Rashida started calling her “my little angel.” And Mariam learned something wonderful: helping others does not just help THEM — it fills YOUR heart with joy too.
Lesson for today: Look for an old person who needs help — a neighbour, a grandparent, someone in the shop. Carry a bag, open a door, or just smile and greet them. Small help, big happiness. And remember: one day you will be old, and Allah will send you kind helpers too.
Question: Is there an old person near you — a neighbour, a grandparent, someone at the mosque — who might need your strong little hands this week? What will you do to help?
