Islamic Story for Kids About Gratitude: The Warm Jacket
Hamza had a warm blue jacket. It had two pockets, a soft hood, and a zip that made a happy clicking sound. He wore it to school every cold morning.
One day, the wind was very strong. On the way to school, Hamza saw his friend Dawud waiting at the bus stop. Dawud had no jacket. His hands were red from the cold, and he kept blowing on them to make them warm. Hamza sat next to him. “Are you okay?” he asked. “My jacket became too small,” Dawud said quietly. “My father said we will buy a new one when we can.”
Hamza looked at his own warm jacket. Then he remembered something. At home, in his cupboard, there was a second jacket — a green one from last year. It was a little small for Hamza now, but it was clean and warm.
That evening, Hamza told his mother about Dawud. “Can I give him my green jacket?” he asked. His mother smiled. “That is a beautiful idea. A gift given with a kind heart is never small.”
The next morning, Hamza carried the green jacket in a bag. At the bus stop, he gave it to Dawud. “This is for you,” he said. “It kept me warm last year. Now it can keep you warm.” Dawud's eyes shone. He put on the jacket and zipped it up. “It fits!” he laughed. “Thank you, Hamza. Alhamdulillah!”
On the bus, Hamza felt a warm feeling in his chest that had nothing to do with his own jacket. He whispered, “Alhamdulillah for my jacket. Alhamdulillah for my friend. Alhamdulillah for a mother who taught me to share.” From that day, every morning when Hamza put on his blue jacket, he said Alhamdulillah — not only for the jacket, but for all the small gifts he used to walk past without noticing: warm food, a kind family, and friends to share with.
Lesson for today: Gratitude (shukr) means noticing Allah's gifts, big and small, saying Alhamdulillah, and sharing what we have with others.
Question for you: What are three things you can say Alhamdulillah for today?
Saying Alhamdulillah is a simple way to practise shukr — gratitude to Allah for every gift, big and small.
