Islamic Story for Kids About Prayer Habit: The Five Golden Coins

Prayer is the most beautiful habit a Muslim can build — five small meetings with Allah, spread across the day like five bright lanterns. But habits do not grow by wishing. They grow by doing, one day at a time. This is the story of Adam and his jar of five golden coins.

Adam was seven, and his big sister Hiba prayed all five prayers every day. Adam wanted to be like her, but he kept forgetting. He would remember at bedtime and feel sad. Tomorrow, he promised himself, tomorrow I will pray all five. But tomorrow looked a lot like today.

One Friday morning, his father placed a small glass jar on the table, and beside it five shiny golden coins. "These are not real gold," Baba smiled, "but the game is real. Every morning I will give you five coins. Each time you pray a prayer, drop one coin into the jar. At night, we count together."

Adam's eyes lit up. That day he prayed Fajr and Dhuhr and dropped two coins — clink, clink. He forgot Asr while playing, and at Maghrib he remembered just in time — clink. Isha came after dinner — clink. Four coins. One lay lonely on the table. Baba did not scold him. He only said, "Four is wonderful. Tomorrow we try for five."

Day by day, the jar filled a little more. Adam started watching the clock like a little guard. "Baba, is it Asr time yet?" he would call. After one week, the jar held five coins for the first time, and Adam danced around the table. Baba hugged him and said, "Look, Adam — five golden coins. And you know what? The angels count your real prayers the same way, one by one, with love."

Soon Adam did not need the coins at all. Prayer had become his habit — as natural as breakfast. And the best part? He made a jar for his little cousin too, and taught him the game.

Lesson for today: Big habits are built from small steps. Do one good thing every day, and soon it becomes part of who you are — just like Adam's five prayers.

A question for you: What small good habit would you like to build? Could you start today, with just one step?

Source note: This story is original fiction written to teach the habit of the five daily prayers, based on the Qur'anic command to establish prayer (meaning in our own words).

Allah commands us in the Qur'an to establish prayer, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that the five daily prayers are like a flowing river that washes away sins (meanings in our own words; reported in Sahih Muslim).
