Islamic Story About Honesty in Online Selling: The Phone with a Secret

Honesty is easy when everyone can see what you are selling. It is much harder when the buyer cannot see the fault — and only you know it is there. This is the story of Daniyal, one used phone, and the honest sentence that cost him a sale and won him something far bigger.

Daniyal was twenty years old and saving for a laptop for his studies. His old phone still looked perfect: no scratches, a bright screen, a strong camera. He took beautiful photos of it, wrote a careful advertisement — “Used phone for sale, good condition” — and posted it on an online marketplace.

Within an hour, a buyer messaged him: “I will take it. I can pay tonight.” Daniyal's heart jumped. The laptop was suddenly within reach. But as he packed the phone into its box, a memory stopped him cold. Twice that week, the phone had switched itself off at twenty percent battery. He had forgotten about it — but now he remembered, clearly.

Nobody would have known. The buyer lived in another city. The phone looked perfect. Daniyal could have taken the money, and the buyer would only discover the fault days later. His hand hovered over the send button. Then he thought of the shopkeeper his grandfather always praised — the one who weighed honestly even when no inspector was watching.

Daniyal did something hard. He messaged the buyer back: “Before you pay, I must tell you honestly: twice this week the phone switched off by itself at twenty percent battery. I think the battery is weak. I will lower the price, or you may cancel — I will not hide this from you.” Then he waited, his stomach tight.

The buyer replied quickly: “I am cancelling. I need a reliable phone.” Daniyal stared at the screen. His honest sentence had just cost him the sale. He felt foolish. Was honesty really worth it, if it only lost you money?

That evening, something unexpected happened. The buyer wrote again: “My brother saw our chat. He said: a seller this honest is rare. He wants to buy your phone — at your price — because he trusts you now. And he has a laptop to sell too. He will give you a fair price for it.” Daniyal laughed out loud. The sale he had lost had become two fair deals — and a reputation he could be proud of.

When Daniyal told his grandfather the whole story that night, the old man nodded slowly. "My son,” he said, "a shopkeeper who cheats may get rich for a season, but people stop trusting his scales. A shopkeeper who tells the truth may lose one sale, but he gains customers for life. You did not lose money today, Daniyal. You bought something money cannot buy: a name people can trust." Daniyal thought about those words for a long time. The laptop could wait a little longer. His name could not.

Lesson: In trade, honesty is not a strategy for getting rich; it is a duty — especially when the buyer cannot see the fault. A hidden defect disclosed is a trust earned; a hidden defect sold is a debt that follows you, even if no one ever complains. Allah puts blessing (barakah) in honest dealings, and that blessing often returns through doors you did not expect.

Daily-life application: (1) Before selling anything — a phone, a car, a piece of furniture — write down every fault you know, and disclose it in the advertisement itself, not after payment. (2) Photograph the faults too, not only the beautiful angles. (3) If you are the buyer, ask directly: “Is there any fault I should know about?” — an honest seller will respect the question. (4) Price fairly after disclosure: honesty does not mean giving things away, and a fair price for a faulty item is still a fair price.

Discussion question: Have you ever bought or sold something online and discovered a hidden fault afterwards? What would honest disclosure have changed for both sides?
